Old Magic - Sensory Spellcasters
Before the Trees were born and altered the Quintessence of the world, People were restricted in how they could utilize their innate magical gifts. Oddly it was also restricted to your place of birth.
Those in the East could Hear Magic and used the vibrations they heard to seek sources of power and grow their strength. Southerners Could see magic all around them. using their eyes to calculate magical happenings. The people of the Western Desert could feel magic through their skin. This was a much more delicate form of magic usage that allowed for a deep understanding of magic. Those in the Wastes supposedly could smell the magic radiating off of things and even smell the magic of a soul.
Us in the North could simply speak and the world around us would vibrate and change to our will. It was arguably the most powerful of the five types but needed intense training to be able to master.
As time has gone on, the Quintessence of every generations soul has altered slightly. Scholars believe we are being affected by the Quintessence given off by the Trees. It is almost as if however magic worked prior was altered once the Worldbreaker Calamity occurred and the supposed Creators of our world perished. Now that the Trees hold domain over our land, they seemingly began to homogenize the souls of all the people of Persephone.
This does not mean that none are born with the ability to use the old ways of Magic, since as a student of the Rookery, you are most likely able to Speak like the Mages of Old. Like Me and your other Professors. Being able to Speak is simply extremely rare, same as being able to do any of the other forms of Old Magic. Being born now, with the additional ability of being able to speak is a great boon to ones abilities as it essentially gives us multiple ways of altering and utilizing our own quintessence and that of the world around us. If trained correctly, you could be a Master Caller and a Master Harper. Manipulating the Weave with your hands and voice at the same time and you could also do it alongside others. Very few have mastered both. If you want to see the closest thing to a Dual Master, watch Professor Celestine Belle in battle. It is a marvel I have not seen elsewhere.
Callers - Those Who Speak
Callers:
This specific group of people are seen as an older form of magic users as not many are born with the ability to speak out to the weave and have it listen any longer. In the days of the Silent, all were born with the intrinsic knowledge of how to Call and could learn to speak and vibrate the threads around them. This Vibration would touch upon the very nature of the threads and the Caller could force threads to resonate using this vibration, creating many effects. This typically required decent knowledge of what they wanted but was not always the case. To explain further, if a Caller wanted to create a bout of fire they would at least have to know and understand what fire was before their resonance would work correctly. But if a Caller wanted to create a ring of extremely hot fire, have that ring keep its shape and push the ring out away from them, they would have to have a much deeper understanding of how the fire could be created, the air around the fire needed to feed it and how to keep the threads of magic all together while moving. It becomes a much more complex art that takes intense research and practice to master. The art gets even deeper when a Caller goes beyond simple elemental magic manipulation. Everything has a specific resonance. From sea water to the bucket used to carry it to the arms holding the bucket. All things can be manipulated if the user can learn to call out the correct resonant tone and focus their soul energy properly.
